The Hylaeus Project Proje SU

Proje SU: Water Project

In 2016 I came on as a collaborator to Proje SU, an interdisciplinary and exploratory project started by Margaret Tolbert looking at water traditions and history in Southern Turkey. Working with a team of artists, scientists, and writers, the project links the essential relationship between freshwater springs and human society in ancient Lycia into the present. Much of this water is threatened today by a growing agricultural industry in the area and large infrastructure projects diverting it from its public access points. Margaret, who works primarily as a painter, has been engaging with water conservation and history for many years. Her previous project, AQUIFERious, included photographs, artistic cave maps, essays and scientific articles from ten contributors about some of Florida's most precious freshwater spring systems.

The Proje SU: Water Project publication has yet to be released. Contributors are Margaret Ross Tolbert, Yusuf Yavuz, Can Denizman, Aidan Koch, Neriman Polat, Sidney Wade, Yesim Agaoglu, Mel Kenne, Naziha Mestaoui, and Jarrod Ryhal.

One of my main contributions was to create a visual narrative using the mythological character Leto to explore the various locations of interest for the project. Using photos and life drawings made while traveling as well as aspects of Leto's story- the birth of Artemis and Apollo and being denied drinking water for her and her children -I created a series of comic vignettes that accompany the different chapters in the Proje SU book.
